Providence Spring Elementary - Picture This
The Light Factory conducted an artist and residency program as a part of the 5th grade Language Arts curriculum at Providence Spring Elementary. Students learned how to use compositional elements such as framing, rule of 1/3, color, and line to improve their photos. After practicing the basics, students went on to use creative writing activities and photography to produce conceptual self portraits representing particular parts of their personality. These photographs were edited using Picassa to add special effects. A final exhibition of photos and poetry inspired by the project will go on display at the school.
Shalom Park Freedom School Camp
The Light Factory conducted an artist and residency program as a part of the Shalom Park Freedom School Camp. Scholars learned about light and shadow through the creation of photographic Sunprints. Upper-level scholars used the cafeteria transformed into a darkroom to develop their own pinhole photographs. They not only learned the development process of traditional black & white printing; they learned about the history of photography and origin of camera.
Mill Villages: Weaving the Past with the Future
The Light Factory is partnering with the Charlotte Symphony, Kinetic Works, The Levine Museum of the New South and Children’s Theater of Charlotte to undergo a program at Piedmont Middle School relating students to the history of Mill Villages. Students will explore various artistic mediums while discovering the history of local and regional Mill Village history. Guest artists from each organization will work with students to create group and individual pieces responding to Mill Villages from their personal perspective. Visual Art Students will work with Jen Crickenberger from The Light Factory to produce photographic works representing their unique perspective on mill villages. The final performance is combine all of the different art forms in one animated production.
My Life in Charlotte
Students at Hawthorne High School explored their personal perspectives on what it means to be a teenager living in Charlotte. Teaching Artist, John Lemmon, taught students the art of stop motion animation. Their final animations were publicly screened at Charlotte’s First Night celebration on New Year's Eve, sponsored by Charlotte Center City Partners who funded this project.
